General Dental Council
Registrant Council Members
Remuneration: £15,000 per annum
The General Dental Council (GDC) is the UK-wide statutory regulator of over 114,000 dental professionals, including over 43,000 Dentists and over 71,000 Dental Care Professionals (DCP). The GDC’s primary purpose is to protect patient safety and maintain public confidence in dental services. To achieve this it registers qualified professionals, sets and enforces standards of dental practice, investigates fitness to practise complaints, and ensures the quality of dental education.
The environment in which the GDC operates is complex. As a UK-wide regulator, it works across the separate healthcare systems of each of the four nations, all with different challenges and priorities. The GDC operates in an environment where both NHS and private provision is important, and at a time when there are significant changes and challenges facing all dental professionals. It works within a legislative framework that it is actively working with Government to modernise.
The GDC’s Council decides policy, sets strategic direction and approves key organisational changes. It is composed of six Lay Members from a variety of professional backgrounds, and six registered dental professionals, and it is Chaired by the one of the twelve Members.
The GDC is now looking for two registrant Council Members and applicants must be currently on the GDC register to be eligible to apply.
Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to supporting confidence in public services and patient safety, and experience of contributing to an organisation working within a statutory framework. They must have the ability to exercise effective executive oversight, together with the capacity to understand the organisational issues facing the GDC. Experience of contributing constructively to collective decision-making processes will be critical, as well as a personal commitment to good governance and equality, diversity and inclusion.
There are two posts. For role one, we are also seeking experience of monitoring financial statements and organisational reporting, together with an understanding of risk management, particularly in the context of public sector audit requirements. The time commitment for this role is between 15 and 20 days per year, to prepare for and attend meetings. This appointee will also be asked to serve on one or more of the Council’s non-statutory Committees.
Role two is open to all registered dental professionals but the GDC particularly welcomes applications from registered Dental Care Professionals, such as dental nurses, technicians, hygienists or one of the other regulated dental professions. Existing non-executive experience is not mandatory, but applicants should be enthusiastic about developing this within a regulatory environment and should also bring an understanding of the issues facing the profession. The time commitment for this role is around 10-15 days per year.
The remuneration for each post is £15,000, plus expenses, in-line with policy. The successful candidates are expected to take up the roles from October 2023.
The GDC understands the diverse nature of the dental workforce and the society it serves, and particularly welcomes applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, from all walks of life.
